I, Jason Meade, do solemnly offer these my responses to The Road to Lisp Survey:
When did you first try Lisp seriously, and which Lisp family member was it? Many of us had multiple run-ins with Lisp before it "stuck". The "stick" date is of most interest, but you can share earlier encounters if you like.
My first run in was Emacs Lisp, just last year (2006). I discovered Common Lisp. At first I thought it was way too confusing, but I liked the concept. I gave Scheme a try, but found it a bit limiting, so I gave CL another go. Bingo! Third time's the charm!
What led you to try Lisp?
Didn't I just answer this? Ok, some background. I'm a old Unix guy, been working it since '91 (ok, not SO old). I love shell scripting, C programming. C++ is really fun too.
One day I'm told that we're starting up a new Windows 2000 app, in Java, and I'm heading the team. Argh. Suddenly C is gone, and Java is in its place. SH is gone, and CMD is in its place. Make is gone, and Ant is in its place. Emacs is gone, and Eclipse is in its place.
See where this is going? Well, I'm totally out of my comfort zone. Since I had been using Emacs for years, and since I knew that Emacs was basically a lisp interpreter, I figured I could ditch Eclipse by hacking Emacs to perform all the functions that Eclipse provides. My team-mates thought I was crazy (read stupid). Well, I bought a book, read it, and began hacking. A few weeks later I had class-to-class hyperlinking, project compilation from arbitrary package locations, class finding utils. It was great! I became an immediate fan.
Then I decided to see what else I could do...
What other languages have you been using most?
C, C++, Java, Bourne Shell (and Bourne Again Shell), TCL/TK, JavaScript, Make, Ant, SED, HTML, SQL - All the usuals. (Oh, and Scheme, naturally).
How far have you gotten in your study of Lisp? I know this is hard to quantify. Just wing it.
Well, I'm designing my first major project in Lisp, and am starting to craft the basic modules. I'll be purchasing hardware and/or software to support this effort soon.
What do you think of Lisp so far?
Lisp sucks? No, wait, that's not right...
Um, I guess you can say that I'm still a noob, but I can see the light!
