I, Mikael Jansson?, once enchanted by the snake, now finding pleasure in the parens, present to you my contribution to the The Road to Lisp Survey:
When did you first try Lisp seriously, and which Lisp family member was it?
Around 2007, I'd say. A friend of mine, the late Martin "rydis" Rydström, had been going on about Lisp (pointing to p-cos, PG and the other usual suspects) for quite some time, and how I should drop Python. So, I got myself that-dead-sexy-book (google://lisp+tutorial) and started reading. Hacking is done in Vim using ViLisp.
First encounter was in 5th or 6th grade (mid 90s) in the public library, reading some book on AI and parens. Back then, I only knew how to program in BASIC and as such it looked like black magic to me. Too bad PCL wasn't written back then!
What led you to try Lisp? I'm always looking into languages and technology. It excites me. But I think it was the DSL capabilities of Lisp and the unflexibility of the traditional languages (such as Python) that originally attracted me.
What other languages have you been using most? C, C++, Python. (And although I've probably written more lines of PHP than any other language, I'd rather not include that in the list....)
How far have you gotten in your study of Lisp? I've just begun reading the example chapters in PCL, but the parens have already disappeared!
What do you think of Lisp so far? Sexy.
